In baseball, an assist (abbreviated to A) is a defensive statistic credited to any player who fields or touches a batted ball that results in a put out by another fielder. A fielder can be credited with one assist only in a play, even if they touch the ball more than once during the same play.
For outfielders, an assist is an important statistic as it suggests an outfielder with superb capabilities and a strong arm, who can throw a batted ball to an infielder who then records an out. This can be an uncaught ball, or a caught fly ball that results in an out. Thus, an outfielder (as well as other fielders) can record a putout and an assist in the same play.
