The announcement of a PVP mode should come as no surprise. Fans had been clamoring for Sea of Thieves to create a Battle Royale mode. Rare responded by saying the mode, or something like it, would likely happen if they felt there was enough interest. Considering how popular and successful the genre has been , it’s safe to say that players were sufficiently interested. Battle Royales aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, with Call of Duty and Battlefield V creating their own versions to compete with the current reigning champion of the genre, Fortnite . Most notably, players have been slamming the servers , trying to get online and partake of Rare’s pirate sandbox. Speaking of AI ships, I cannot help but mention the skeletons manning the cannons on various islands. While they certainly add an intriguing game mechanic for advanced players, I find them to be rather annoying most of the times. It’s not that I dislike their presence there, but I do believe they are a bit too accurate for creatures that lack eyes. I’ve probably taken more damage from them than from enemy crews and I’ve fought plenty of other players. So, I can only hope that the AI crew on skeleton ships will be a little less of a nuisance when it comes to firing their cannons. Otherwise, we all might as well say goodbye to our vessels for g

 
Once you do get your sea legs, there is some semblance of a progression system. There are three different factions in the world, each with its own unique objective. The Gold Hoarders will give you the task of finding treasure chests that are marked on a map; the Order of Souls are bounty missions that ask you to defeat named undead pirates; the Merchant Alliance will give you a list of livestock to retrieve that you must deliver to a specific outpost by a certain date. Completing these tasks will garner reputation with each faction and gold for each piece of treasure you turn in. This will allow you to purchase weapons, clothing, and accessories —all of which are seemingly cosmetic — from merchants found on the various outposts. The good news, though, is that Rare is still tracking player’s progress on Sea of Thieves achievements, so when they are re-enabled the achievements completed should unlock. Granted, Rare also said that players should receive all of their missing gold and reputation once things calmed down with the servers, and many reported not receiving everything they earned.
